Moldover’s MOJO, Now Open Source; Grab Build Details and Ableton Live Sets and Effects

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Live electronic musician Moldover’s MOJO is the Sherman Tank of controllers: enormous, indestructible, destructive. It’s also a deeply involved build, costing US$ 1999.00. If you want to get some of that … um, MOJO … but don’t have two grand lying around, or if you want to adapt it to your own mojo, Moldover’s work is now fully open-source.

If you’re an experienced hardware maker, you could use these files to build your own MOJO or adapt ideas into your own design. (Moldover uses the excellent, powerful Livid Builder line of parts.) If you are a builder, you can get an idea of what’s involved with the build in the timelapse and explanation above. If not, you can live vicariously through Matt.

But builder or not, if you use Ableton Live, you should pay attention: in that big archive are the Live templates, which you could use to adapt to any controller you like, including some tasty effects chains to play with. That means even if soldering irons send you into a cold sweat, this is news worth watching. (Only one criticism: I’d like to see a license included, which would make this proper open source hardware.)

If you do have two grand, meanwhile, boutique controller maker 60 Works is taking over manufacture of the MOJO so you can get your own. 60 Works’ Dave Cross shares details with CDM:

* 1999USD
* hand made (duh)
* improved over Moldover’s original, based on his touring experience. Mostly tech improvements under the hood.

Grab the open source download as an archive (cough, guys, GitHub), and read up on the hardware:

http://blog.60works.com/mojo

Another video details Matt’s personal journey through controllers and shows off what the MOJO is about:

Logic gui: www.ampguimods.net www.logic-cafe.com Ableton skins: bluskreen.com sonictransfer.com abletonlife.com – tutorials ,articles or download all: uploadmirrors.com

*** TO GET THESE SAMPLES: EITHER THE 23500 Drum Samples , or the Motif or Fantom sound packs, or the Logic Pro tutorial series, or for any inquiries in general email CRAIG01@GMAIL.COM or visit WWW.RUINERBEATS.COM (Under Construction) ** This is Dj Ruiner demoing the new sample pack from www.djruiner.com — The full Roland Fantom X8 + Strings Expansion pack. I also make a beat using the Fantom X8 drums + synth sounds about half way through, so that’s why the video is so long. Lots of piano playing + beat making. You can get this now from www.djruiner.com. Screw buying a 00 synth (even 00 from ebay is alot) and cop the entire pack for NI Komplete (mac/windows compatible, all daws that support vst/aus) for cheap. Don’t sleep on this one… Gaa, I hate letting everyone else have access to the GOOD stuff. ;)

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Question by : How to make beats with ableton live?
I have just downloaded ableton live about a day ago. I am pretty familiar with it i have had the demo for a month. But I see most DJ’s with turntables, mixers, and piano keyboard things. I want to also record my music but i dont know what i need to get i know i need a mixer but what else? Do i need turntables or the piano keyboard? i need help on what equipment i need.
i have a macbook pro with ableton live intro.

Best answer:

Answer by James R
you will need a midi keyboard.
possibly a turntable for sampling records.
you will need a pro level sound device with multiple inputs and outputs.
you will need some good headphones, and speakers.
then you will need to practice for hours and hours.

check out the book

“Live 8 power” very good book

What do you think? Answer below!

Q&A: Which DAW should I get? Should I get Ableton Suite 8 or NI’s MASCHINE?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Question by : Which DAW should I get? Should I get Ableton Suite 8 or NI’s MASCHINE?
Hey everyone. I started producing music with FL Studio 10 for about a month or so.

First of all, I’m a Windows user, but will be switching to a Mac due to from what I’ve seen Mac is more music friendly, and I also am interested in other things that Mac offers, but Windows does not.

ANYWAYS on to the topic

I’m interested in making Electro House and Hip-Hop beats.

I was thinking of getting Native Instruments’ Maschine for making the beats, but I don’t know if it’s worth spending $ 600 for Maschine, and also from what I’ve seen I think Maschine is a better use for hip-hop, and I DON’T know if it’ll be of any use for me to make house music.

On the other hand I saw that what most big name DJs and electronic music producers (Deadmau5, David Guetta, Skrillex, etc…) use Ableton for making/producing their music.

PS. I WILL be getting both Maschine and Ableton, but it’ll take some time until I plan to have both since I don’t have all the money in the world to spend it at once. ;)

Help is appreciated.

Answer by JimKata
Both are good products. Abelton Live is preferred for anyone actually doing shows and such, so if thats the direction you going I would go with Live first and get MASHINE later. I’m pretty sure they both work on PC and Mac.
