Expanded Lineup Could Make Moogfest Electronic Sound Event of the Fall

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Artists know essential gear when they see it. Never leave home without your Moogerfooger, and your banana. Dan Deacon, surrounded by gear. Photo (CC-BY) Andrew Braithwaite.

“Moogfest,” more than just a showcase around a brand, is an event that invokes one of sound’s greatest pioneers, Robert Moog. For a lot of artists, that’s a pretty high bar to meet. The massive Moogfest brewing for October 29-31 in Asheville, North Carolina appears to be attracting sound-loving artists with abandon – with the new organizational muscle of Bonnaroo producers AC Entertainment presumably partly to thank.

This week, the festival announced the addition of Hot Chip, Pretty Lights, Girl Talk, Panda Bear, Dan Deacon, Four Tet, RJD2, EL-P, Dam-Funk, School of Seven Bells, Matmos, and Emeralds. It’s looking like a pretty nice way to celebrate Halloween.

Moogfest wasn’t always this way. I covered one of the New York events for Keyboard, sadly the night that news broke that Dr. Moog was unable to attend due to health. Some of the artists were great, but some of the experimental spirit you’d expect at a Moogfest was missing, and being stuck in Times Square felt horribly wrong. This massive festival in Asheville could well become one of the events of the year.

In fact, I see no reason not to be hopeful about new sonic events around the US and North America. Moogfest can’t possibly cover the gamut of their own user base in a weekend, let alone all that’s happening now in electronic sound. Whatever your neck of the woods in the world, we’re interested to hear from you.

Here’s the finished lineup:

Friday, October 29
MGMT
Big Boi
Girl Talk
Panda Bear
RJD2
El-P
Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich & Fussible
Saturn Never Sleeps (Featuring King Britt & Rucyl)
The Octopus Project
Kuroma

Saturday, October 30
Massive Attack
Thievery Corporation
Jonsi
Caribou
Four Tet
Matmos
Dâm-Funk
School of Seven Bells
Jon Hopkins
Emeralds
Mountain Man

Sunday, October 31
Pretty Lights
Hot Chip
Dan Deacon
Mimosa
Two Fresh
DJ Spooky

Simple Xmp Modplayer for Android Brings Retro Back; Building an Android Tracker?

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Those crazy Amiga artists were ahead of their time. The lightweight real-time music engines and formats they began were uncommonly efficient, and allowed the exchange of elaborate electronic music using a minimum of resources – with some accompanying compositional and sound design ingenuity required, as well. As a result, getting a phone handset to reproduce their work today is a pretty manageable task, and some of the music available is concise and clever. Pop on some headphones, load up some tunes, and you may feel you’re starring in your very own Amiga point and click adventure the next time you hit the grocery market.

There are a number of trackers and mod players for mobile platforms from iPhone to Windows Mobile, but Android is now in on the game thanks to Xmp (Extended Module Player). Using Android’s JNI-based NDK interface for accessing native code from Java, the “experimental” queue up some files and play back on your SD card. My sense is that this hasn’t been widely tested, which is where you come in: got an Android phone? Ideally, got some obscure models of Android phone? Load this up and see if you’re getting the retro tracker music love. Let us know in comments how it goes.

Full downloads and code for Xmp, a command-line mod player for Mac, Windows, Linux and pretty much every OS every invented, along with the experimental Android port:
http://xmp.sourceforge.net/

Thanks to Dan Galpin, developer advocate at Google, for pointing this out to me.

Now, this brings me to my open question. Suffice to say, someone could build a pretty player interface for Xmp, with playlist support and the lot. But what about actually editing files on your Android device, as you can on iPhone, PSP, GamePark, PC, Mac, etc.? It’s possible that the Xmp code could be used as a template for porting the engine of something like LittleGPTracker. But looking through quickly, I wonder if Xmp itself might serve as a real-time engine? It’d also be interesting to design a tracker interface that took the UI patterns of platforms like Android to heart, rather than just reproducing interfaces designed for other platforms. If you’re interested in such a project or have some insight into what might be practical, let us know in comments.

Cinematique Instruments releases Experimental Box for Kontakt

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Cinematique Instruments Experimental Box

Cinematique Instruments has released Experimental Box, a collection of highgly playable rhythms, ambients and instruments which were assembled from glitch, noise, hiss, hum and other weird and bizarre sounds, giving you a wonderful tool for writing experimental and minimal music.

“Experimental Music” is the genus for a couple of music styles, which incorporate unorthodox and unique elements. The Experimental Box we offer focuses on aspects of glitch, minmal and noise music and gives you a full toolbox of ingredients for cacophony, dissonance, atonality, noise, glitch, machines, hum, and repetition. It is a wonderful assortment of highgly playable rhythms, ambients and instruments which are perfect for writing music in an experimental and minimalist way. Beyond this, the box is suitable for combination with atmospheric, ambient and cinematic music…or just to build a wild cacophony.

The rhythms, ambients and instruments of the Experimental Box were assembled from unique sounds such as stations-announcements, trains, paper crumpling, acoustic and electronic noise, station hum, underground-railway noise, pneumatic doors, crown cap shaking, glitches, noise, hiss, hum and other weirdness. Check out all the opportunities the instruments provide by using the modwheel and the programmed surface of NI´s Kontakt.

Experimental Box features

  • Brakes & Noises: Screaming brakes of an underground railway and noise ambience sent through a tape delay.
  • Clashing Rails: Screaming rails and station ambience including an announcement gong. Modwheel switches between the two scenarios.
  • Cuts Cap & Paper: A couple of tempo-synced loops: Crone-Cap shaking, Paper crumpling,
