Compose a lullaby with raindrops!

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

We’ve seen our fair share of Flash-based music making apps, but Raindrop, a promotional tool from lullaby maestros Lullatone, is actually one of the most interesting despite its simple appearance.

Rather than using a step-sequencer, Raindrop records your sequences in real time, providing a metronome to help you get into the swing of things.

It’s strangely hypnotic, so make sure you don’t start playing with it if you’re supposed to be doing something else – like writing a blog for example…

Eigenlabs unveil Star Wars-style instrument

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

It may resemble something from a galaxy far, far away, but the brand new performance instrument from Eigenlabs is already creating enough of a stir to be popping up on mainstream sites like the BBC and Engadget. In fact, after spending eight years researching and developing, the Devon-based company are claiming that their Eigenharp is the “most revolutionary new musical instrument of the last 60 years.”

There are two models in the range: the flagship Eigenharp Alpha (£3950) and the more-affordable but stripped-back Eigenharp Pico (£349). The Alpha has 133 hyper-sensitive keys. We say “hyper-sensitive” because each key can detect finger placement to within less than one micron (about the size of a single bacteria), respond to up and down movements (for controlling pitch bends and vibrato, etc) and side to side movements for, say, the opening and closing of a filter. In addition, there is a breath pipe near the ‘headstock’ and two strip controllers along the ‘neck’. And if that wasn’t enough, two optional foot controllers can be connected to the included basestation, and the instrument has sockets for a microphone and headphones. The included sounds contain a modelled cello, clarinet and synth, some 1500 drum loops, as well as Piano, Rhodes and Wurlitzer multis from Sampletekk. Of course, you can control a multitude of plug-in instruments and effects via the USB connection, too, although both instruments are currently Mac-only – PC compatibility is promised in the future. Check out Eigenlabs website for more details and the exact specifications of each model. And be sure to watch the video below to see the Eigenharp Alpha in action.

Bobby McFerrin demonstrates our innate musical understanding

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Here’s a cool little video we saw on CDM the other day – it might not have an awful lot to do with computers, but it superbly demonstrates people’s intuition when it comes to rhythm and pitch. Check it!

Music industry stance on proposed P2P file-sharing legislation

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The music piracy debate is dividing artists, labels and the music industry as a whole. Some artists, such as Blur sticksman Dave Rowntree, believe that there should be no legislative action taken against those using P2P (peer-to-peer) file-sharing networks, where the illegal uploading and downloading of vast quantities of music is rife – the frontline of piracy, if you will. The major labels, of course, want to completely ban the use of P2P software for downloading their artists’ work for free, and it seems that the UK government are fully behind them.

After a report in early 2008 by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, calls were made for a law compelling internet service providers (ISPs) to deal with anybody using their networks for illegal file-sharing. Since then, the ISPs have been in voluntary discussions with various record labels to try to reach an agreement on subscription services for downloading their content.

Now UK Music, the collective representing the UK’s commercial music industry, have issued a statement clarifying their stance: “Tackling the issue of unlicensed P2P file-sharing is critical to this future, as well as enabling a commercial environment where sustainable, licensed digital services can prosper. Services that will benefit creators, investors and consumers alike.” Those currently getting their music for free probably won’t be overjoyed by UK Music’s comments on how to deal with offenders: “In context of an evolving licensed digital music market, we believe that Government intervention is extremely welcome and that, subject to assessment, Ofcom should be granted appropriate and proportionate powers as directed by the Secretary of State.”

What this ultimately means is that UK Music are angling for the suspension of internet access for repeat offenders. UK Music will submit their full collective response to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (the office currently reviewing the proposed legislation) on September 29. We’ll let you know what happens.

Remix car sounds to win a Hyundai i30 hatchback!

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Fancy a shiny new Hyundai i30 car to roll around town in? Of course you do, but rather than splurging over £11,000 on one, why not enter Hyundai’s remix competition to be in with a chance of winning one?

This is a remix compo with a twist, as the supplied sample pack consists entirely of sounds recorded from a real-life i30. Sounds include honkin’ horns, slamming boots, wipers (in three different speeds), grinding handbrakes, revving engines, and loads more.

All you have to do is knock a track together using the samples, put it up on YouTube and fill in the entry form – entries will then be voted for by Joe Public and the composer of the most popular entry will win a brand new i30 car. Not bad! Hyundai are also encouraging entrants to add visuals to their YouTube clip, although this is not necessary to enter.

Get on over to www.30beats.co.uk to find out more and get your hands on the sample pack – the compo closes on 1 October 2009, so get your skates on!

To get you thinking along the right lines, Hyundai teamed up with DJ Krysko to try out the sounds and come up with a tune – the result is the house-influenced 30beats, which was debuted at Sankey’s nightclub – check it out in the video below.
