This is a little jam with a couple of instances of an Ableton Live Instrument created with samples of a snake drum. The original snake drum had 6 notes. This instrument is spread across the entire keyboard, with some interesting artifacts in the lower and higher extremes. Some interesting macro knob mappings make this an extremely versatile little virtual instrument! Download it here: bit.ly The original snake drum belongs to Mike Longo of My Summer. My Summer is one of New York’s best rock bands and my close friends : www.facebook.com Every week I make a free Ableton Live device for your downloading pleasure @: www.afrodjmac.com Cheers! -AfroDJMac

Martin Grain – Minimix #1 (House)

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Hi there! This is a little mix I did on my temporary setup consisting of a Zero SL (Mk1), a Kontrol X1 and Traktor Pro 2. My apologies for the horrible video quality. Thanks for watching! No copyright infringement intended. —– For those of you who want something to read while listening, here is a mini review of the Zero SL: • Hardware First off all, the build quality, which in short is not that great. The buttons are soft and the feel is questionable, to say the least. The faders are flimsy and short. The endless encoders have a click to them. In practice this means that EQ, and any sweepable parameters for that matter, can only be properly mapped to the bottom row of rotary knobs. On the plus side, those rotary knobs are very nice and smooth. They don’t have the center position snap like a typical DJ mixer would have, unfortunately. In general, the layout is pretty awesome. Everything seems to be positioned in the right place. For those of you with big hands, the encoders and knobs might not have enough space between them. The LED feedback and big LCD screens are a very nice addition and really contribute to a fast workflow. • Software For a digital DJ setup, the Zero SL is a mediocre MIDI device. It’s not fully compatible with Traktor. In Automap mode the endless encoders exhibit some quirks in combination with the popular DJ software. In normal MIDI mode the communication is one-way which means the LCD screens can’t be used for feedback from the software. As a

I’m using both Ableton Live and FL Studio (Producer Edition) and both are great for doing electronic music. Just keep trying and see what you like best.
