Connect mixer to computer/DAW through Fast Track pro USB?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Question by Jackson: Connect mixer to computer/DAW through Fast Track pro USB?
I am planning on buying a mixer to use for recording because the 2 mic inputs on the M-Audio fast track pro that I currently have just doesn’t cut it anymore. Is it possible to route a new mixer (say a Peavey PV10) to my M-audio Fast Track Pro, and then connect that normally through the USB and still pick up each mic directly and separately on my DAW?

I’m sure buying a sound card to install would be the better way to go, but I’d love to save the money.

You are better off going directly thru the Fast Track Pro. When you go thru a mixer the signal passes thru a lot of stop before it hit the computer thus giving you a thin signal. But going directly thru the fast Track you get the true essence of the signal..

Modeselektor and Thom Yorke in Crazy-Good Track: New Video, More from Monkeytown

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

You know they’re enjoying this. So you will, too. Photo: Ragnar Schmuck Studio, courtesy Modeselektor.

Absorbing the earnestly-nervous urgency of Thom Yorke’s rhythms, Modeselektor dial in a perfect collaboration on “Shipwreck,” a highlight from their latest full-length. Tony T. Datis directs the music video adaptation into a dark narrative. Wandering children set the scene, but keep watching as the cadence of the video begins to gather momentum; Datis finds his way into the phrasing of the music and the story becomes gripping as it moves on.

Thom Yorke, meanwhile, has quietly become a voice beyond his band or even his solo work, effortlessly stepping into extraordinary electronic collaborations in recent years.

And Modeselektor, for their part, have I think a real triumph with Monkeytown. I caught the duo in an intimate setting in Berlin, and was struck as always by their compulsive, sometimes whimsical invention – it comes across in their music, in the gleeful rapport they share together. That’s a fancy way of saying these boys enjoy messing around with music. (They also enjoy, in the show I saw, ripping apart the walls, fiddling with strobe lights, and spraying champagne on people. But that doesn’t stop them from operating their machines beautifully.) The album deserves a track-by-track review – I welcome guest contributions in case I don’t get to it – but in one terrific collaboration after another, Gernot and Sebastian craft perfect, dance-inspiring songs. The PR says something about how they still “assault the dance floor” with songs with “structure” but that doesn’t sound nearly as good as it feels.

Have a listen and let us know if you can put it better. With Busdriver, you get a much … less dark … sound than the one above, with some of the signature humor Modeselektor manages to make eminently danceable. On SoundCloud:

“Shipwreck” EP release, with HD video, is out on November 4.

Are there any free, down-loadable programs that are capable of making a hardstyle track. (Not Fruity Loops)?

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Question by Posty: Are there any free, down-loadable programs that are capable of making a hardstyle track. (Not Fruity Loops)?
I want to find a program that is basically dedicated to making hardstyle, but I have tried FruityLoops 8, and it’s not really what I’m looking for. If you could help that would be great.

Dj’ing w/ Ableton Live: Track beats don’t match?

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Question by sillyfreshdj: Dj’ing w/ Ableton Live: Track beats don’t match?
Sometimes when i’m using Ableton, the song beats won’t match up. I use the Complex Pro setting which is supposed to warp long songs correctly. I just recently bought this program so my knowledge is still limited. How can i fine tune the BPM without the song skipping or jogging during the mix? Thanks.

No idea. The Ableton Live Support Corner forum might be a good place to ask:

I’m trying to take two seperate sound effects and layer them to create one simultanious track.?

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Question by amightylloydwarrior: I’m trying to take two seperate sound effects and layer them to create one simultanious track.?
I’m trying to take many different voice recordings I have taken and layer them to get a semi-echo-ish effect. Many people asking the same question layered together.

Basically I’m looking for an effect similar to in Bruce all mighty when he begins to hear the many voices of the people praying to him all at once.

My goal would be to have one voice more prominent so you can hear AN individual voice at any one moment bug multiple voices throughout the 6-10 second sound effect.

I guess I’m trying to figure out how to layer different sound effects and adjust their individual volumes? I have no idea. I’ve never done this kind of thing before.

I would appreciate it if answers were kept to free programs or programs I might already have (which isn’t any. I do have Windows Movie Maker though). I’ve also messed around with FLStudio’s free demo. But it isn’t worth much when I can’t afford the full product.

Thanks for the help!

For what your trying to do would be very difficult to explain in writing.

What you would have to do is alot of copy/paste, and need audio software with dual or more layers.

Try these softwares out, Audacity is free, and Magix audio cleaning lab 12 is purchase, but can do what your trying to accomplish. I use mac lab 12, if you have any questions concerning the programs, send me an email, hope this helps.
